Testimonials

“My two terms at the Heidelberg Teaching Unit was the time where I got to learn more about myself, how to be a helpful person, and most importantly, how to engage positively in a mainstream school.

The staff at the unit are some of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met. They’re supportive, and they address negative behaviours in a calm way which motivates students to do better. Before being at the unit, I was pessimistic, awkward, and consumed with self-doubt.

The teachers at the unit helped me through that, but I don’t know how they did it. I suppose their positive energy and encouragement changed my ways of thinking. The program is definitely helpful in more ways than one.”

“I was referred to the Teaching Unit because I have anger problems and I fight a lot and I’m trying to work on it and I really didn’t know much about the HTU. At first, I felt a bit iffy about coming to the Unit. And I really thought that it would be strict and a punishment.

Things that I enjoyed about the Unit were going to the zoo with peers, working well in the boxing class and having fun in class. If I knew someone that was coming to the HTU next year I would say that it is a place to work on some of your behaviour and it is not a punishment.”

“I was referred to the HTU because of my behaviour outside the classroom. The only thing I knew about the unit is that it’s at the front of Reservoir High school and it has much less students then a normal classroom. I wasn’t that sure at the start of the term that I wanted to come to the unit but now I feel better that I came. The unit is a much calmer than what I expected. One thing I’d say to a future student it that you should come and build up from all your mistakes at school.”

I was referred because I wasn’t interested in learning. I struggled to go to class for the whole lesson. I was frequently late and unorganised.  It’s easier for me now to show up every day and it’s less tiring for me. I have been helped in building my confidence in learning, myself and being at school in general.”

“I came to the HTU because I thought that it would be a really good for my wellbeing and to show me that I am able to have a growth mindset and not just have a fixed mindset. My hopes for the future are to be a good kid and to show my teachers that when they help me out I can help them out. Thanks a lot to all of the staff at the HTU because they have shown me right from wrong and I have got a bit more good habits. So I would really recommend this to the rest of the new people coming here.”

“I came to the HTU to better myself and help my behaviour and anger and I got what I came here for. I have learnt how to control my anger and behaviour a lot better. I hope to get a whole lot of good marks and no yellow cards when I go back to school. I also hope to get my good reputation back as I have lost it a bit this year. To the staff thank you so much for helping me and inspiring me.”

“I was helped with my attendance, ways to help me stay in class and finding positives in school, things I liked doing. I really enjoyed the boxing and spin classes. They helped me feel good and I got super involved. I’m proud of how determined I’ve been when it comes to my personal work. It feels good getting all of the work done and not making excuses.”
